Job Title: Market Manager

Reports To: Cooperative Development Program Manager

FLSA Status: Part Time/Hourly

Funding Condition: All program-related positions at Lake County Community Development are to be considered as year-to-year depending upon available funding for programs and satisfactory job performance.

The Market Manager is a part time position with primary responsibility for the development and operation of the Ronan Farmers Market, including an on-site presence at the market during all market hours and off-site work during non-market hours. The Market Manager will report to the Program Manager and the Market steering committee/Board. In addition, the manager will represent the market to the market’s vendors, the consumers, project partners, and the community. The goal of this project is to develop a thriving farmers market that provides healthy food to the community and economic opportunity to local farmers, and the Market Manager is responsible for meeting specific project objectives. This physically active job requires time outside in various weather conditions.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Market Operations – Arrive prior to market vendors arriving and remain throughout the market day to: properly place vendors in stalls; place market signs and parking signs; ensure all market rules and state and county regulations are adhered to; answer questions for vendors and consumers; resolve disputes that arise; maintain market grounds in a safe manner; operate market manager’s booth; assist AmeriCorps intern with educational and kids activities as needed; coordinate entertainment; operate market’s nutrition incentive programs; assure the market site is clean once the market is closed and the vendors have left for the day; collect all stall fees owed, make accurate accounting, and deposit in market account.

2. Vendor Relationships – Attract, retain and manage an excellent and diverse mix of local seasonal and daily vendors; maintain database of vendors, their contact information, and any licenses or permits each vendor possesses; communicate market policies, activities, and rules to vendors, keeping them informed throughout the season; bring suggestions from vendors back to the market board/committee; coordinate annual vendor training and meeting.

3. Market Promotion - Expand the customer base of the market using various communications and outreach strategies and creative, low-cost marketing and advertising, including social media; conduct periodic customer counts each market day to assess the level of growth in market usage and effectiveness of marketing strategies; plan special events and activities.

4. Market Development – Complete professional development for market managers; develop community relationships; fundraising; work with market board/committee to plan for market growth and development; prepare site for next season, including securing location, site permits, market insurance, ensure that any maintenance or repairs needed to site are made, secure bathrooms, and organize volunteers, entertainment and activities/events; enroll market and market farmers in nutrition incentive programs; act as liaison to the market’s governing body, providing accounting and performance reports; measure success of market and communicate it to larger community and grant funders.

• Some financial knowledge helpful: i.e., project budgeting

• Passionate about the community and local agriculture

• Knowledge of farmers’ markets and local foods (knowledge of nutrition incentive programs helpful)

• NOT a Ronan Farmers Market vendor

Supervisory Responsibilities: none

Schedule and physical demands: This is a part time job. Evening or weekend work is required. It is expected that the Manager will be at the Market on all Market days for the season; other hours are flexible and may include normal office hours, as required to accomplish the required tasks in a timely manner. The position is year round with seasonal variations in responsibilities and hours.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to travel by car. The employee is regularly required to climb stairs, stand for periods of times in training or group lecture situations and walk on uneven ground at agriculture sites. The individual must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

Hourly Rate for Position: $13-15, depending on experience.
