Lake County is a rural area located in northwest Montana. Covering 1,653.8 square miles, it nearly mirrors the Flathead Indian Reservation. Lake County was formed in 1923 by the State of Montana, with the county seat named as Polson. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe is headquartered in Pablo, 8 miles to the south of Polson. By 1930 the population of Lake County had risen to 9,541, and continued to rise until it stabilized at between 13,000 and 14,000 from 1940 to 1960. Since 1990, it has experienced a strong growth rate as the 5 th fastest growing area in the state, growing by 26% to 26,507 ranking it as the 9th most populous county in Montana. Approximately 50% of the Lake County land base is fee owned with the remaining 50% being tribally owned. Two-thirds of the population lives in the Ronan-Polson area, geographically positioned between the Ninepipes Wildlife Refuge on the south and the lower end of Flathead Lake to the North. There are three incorporated communities in the county (Ronan, Polson and St. Ignatius) and 9 unincorporated communities, including the fast-growing community of Pablo, seat of Tribal government and the location of Salish Kootenai College.
